Richard Flynn—Principal
Mr. Flynn is the founder and president of NELS and has over 40 years of continuous experience in the railroad industry and is a subject-matter expert in rail transportation. He has unique industry experience and deep knowledge of operations, service planning and supply chain dynamics related to the secure and efficient movement of rail shipments in North America.
Under Flynn’s leadership, NELS developed a proprietary service monitoring system called “Lane Manager” that enables deep diagnostics of service performance over specific rail corridors. Utilizing this proprietary software as a foundational component, NELS integrated ESRI GIS capabilities and GPS railcar tracking data to provide both real-time monitoring and highly granular data analysis of rail freight network performance, infrastructure attributes and capacity.
Prior to NELS, Mr. Flynn served as Chief Commercial Officer of IntelliTrans LLC, one of the nation’s largest rail 3PL’s and a wholly-owned subsidiary of TransCore. Flynn subsequently served in an expanded role as Transcore’s Vice President – Account Management, responsible for delivery of motor carrier, rail and barge systems-based logistics solutions. Prior to TransCore, Flynn spend nearly five years at Railinc, a subsidiary of the Association of American Railroads (AAR), as a consultant and later as Asst. Vice President leading Railinc’s Marketing, Sales Customer Support and Product Development.
Mr. Flynn’s Class I rail carrier experience spans 32 years, including two years as a management consultant at CSX Transportation preceded by 29 years at Conrail and its predecessor, Penn Central. Flynn’s rail experience at Conrail included eight years of on-the-ground field operations experience and 21 years in management roles at Conrail’s Philadelphia headquarters. Flynn served as Assistant to the President during Conrail’s IPO, which was the largest, such transaction at its time. Flynn also led development of rail service planning programs that became design templates for systems in place today at Class I rail carriers.
Mr. Flynn holds a B.B.A. (Business and Finance), cum laude from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and has attended a variety of university-based management development programs and professional certification programs.
Jenna Bernabe – Director of Service Delivery
As GIS project manager for NELS, Ms. Bernabe manages rail-centric client projects as well as develops and manages proprietary GIS data models and performs ad-hoc analysis in support of active consulting projects. She creates custom data layers, maps and GIS applications and reports utilizing the extensive NELS rail reference database and SAT-COM latitude/longitude geo-reference data. She is currently developing NELS’ remote sensing capabilities.
Recent successful rail projects include engagements with TSA, NHDOT and the NJTPA. Ms. Bernabe’s prior GIS experience includes a position at Stanford University where she provided support to a range of academic disciplines. She also held an internship at the San Jose Water Company where she digitized engineering documents and spatially adjusted components based on GPS data.
Ms. Bernabe holds a Bachelor of Science from Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY and received her Master of Arts in Geography from San Jose State University, CA in 2012.
Anna Moses - Data Quality Specialist
Ms. Moses joined NELS in May 2014 with a strong background in research and data validation.
Her responsibilities include data mining/knowledge discovery, database error correction and data entry improvement pertaining to freight rail logistics. Her primary role is to research and verify data that is incorporated into the NELS rail reference database by cross-referencing several sources, both online and in print. Her attention to detail improves the accuracy of business-critical lookup tables, in turn increasing the precision of NELS products.
She is also skilled in AutoCAD (civil engineering), having drafted plans for major retail outlets and planned industrial facilities. Her experience utilizing field survey data, satellite imagery, rail alignment and roadway layout plans is integral to our process.
Ms. Moses has a BA degree in scenic design from San Diego State University – San Diego, CA and is a member of the Design Review Commission for the town of Franklin, MA.
